Election Results

The results of the Iraqi elections are out. Looks like a good start. The Shiites dominate the assembly, as they should, but they don't have a majority. A Kurd/Sunni/secular coalition can form a majority if the Shiites get carried away, so we've got the start of democratic checks and balances.

I'm hoping we'll see a split in the Shiite coalition party over the next few years. It's holding together a huge list of groups with nothing in common except their Shia identity. If practical concerns start to outweigh that factions will leave the coalition to make tactical alliances with other groups having similar goals. That would make for a stable, healthy democracy.
