Games and War

I've been a wargamer from way back. One of the earliest was Stratego. Now I've moved on to others, ranging from more realistic to downright silly. I play for the fun of it but there is an educational aspect. Seeing how plans get trashed by an unexpected response drives home how war is the clash of two opposing wills, which is very different from flood control or other struggles against a random force. One danger is forgetting that when the cardboard or plastic pieces are taken off the board it represents people being scared off, killed, or eaten.
